Fiji is consistently ranked as one of the world's top 5 dive destinations. From shallow reef snorkelling suitable for beginners to world-famous shark dives — here's where to go and what each costs.
Fiji earned its reputation as "the Soft Coral Capital of the World" for good reason. The nutrient-rich Pacific currents that sweep through the archipelago support some of the most diverse and vibrant coral ecosystems on the planet — a 2019 survey by the Coral Triangle Initiative recorded over 400 coral species in Fijian waters.
Visibility in Fiji is exceptional by global standards. In dry season (May–October), the Mamanuca and Yasawa reefs regularly see 25–35 metre visibility. The Beqa Lagoon, south of Pacific Harbour, has 30-metre visibility year-round. This clarity is why underwater photos from Fiji look the way they do — colours pop even without a filter.
Snorkelling and diving in Fiji covers a huge range: beginner-friendly shallow reefs directly off island beaches, drift dives through coral canyons, and the famous Beqa Lagoon shark dive where you descend to 30m surrounded by bull sharks, lemon sharks, and reef sharks — one of the most thrilling certified dive experiences in the world.
Fiji's coral reefs support 400+ species — among the most biodiverse in the Pacific.
From beginner day trips to world-class shark dives — every major Fijian snorkel and dive experience rated.

Four reasons experienced divers and beginners keep returning to Fijian waters.
Water visibility in the Mamanucas reaches 25–35 metres during dry season. Colours are vivid, photography is easy, and the reefs look their best. Wet season visibility is lower (12–20m) but still excellent by global standards.
The Beqa Lagoon shark dive is regularly voted among the world's top 10 dive experiences. Bull sharks, lemon sharks, white-tips, and reef sharks gather naturally in this protected lagoon. No baiting — it's a feeding aggregation that occurs naturally.
South Sea Island, Cloud 9, and most island day trips include snorkelling gear and calm, shallow reef access. No experience needed. Most reefs are at 1–5m depth — accessible to any confident swimmer.
Green and hawksbill turtles are resident on many Fijian reefs year-round. South Sea Island, the Mamanucas, and the Yasawa Blue Lagoon all have regular turtle sightings from the surface — no dive certification required.
The most common questions from visitors planning their first Fiji underwater experience.
Yes — the Beqa shark dive requires a PADI Open Water certification or equivalent. The dive is at 30m depth. Snorkellers can observe from the surface but cannot join the shark dive itself. If you're not yet certified, Tour Fiji offers PADI Open Water courses from AUD $650 that take 3–4 days and include pool training, academic sessions, and open water dives.
Yes for the species most commonly encountered in Fijian reefs — reef sharks, white-tip sharks, and nurse sharks are generally non-aggressive and accustomed to snorkellers. Bull sharks (encountered at Beqa Lagoon) are only encountered with a certified dive operator who manages the dive safely and uses strict protocols. Injuries are extraordinarily rare when proper procedures are followed.
Yes — prescription dive masks are available at most dive shops in Fiji, or you can purchase a prescription snorkel mask before your trip. Alternatively, contact lenses are fine for snorkelling if worn with a well-fitting mask. Most operators can source prescription masks with 24–48 hours notice if you contact them in advance.
Expect to see parrotfish, triggerfish, butterflyfish, humphead wrasse, sea turtles, reef sharks, manta rays (seasonal — especially at Kadavu), hawksbill turtles, lionfish, clownfish, moray eels, and thousands of smaller reef species. In July–September, humpback whales are sometimes visible on Yasawa ferry crossings. The Beqa Lagoon adds bull sharks, lemon sharks, and up to 8 shark species to that list.
Some bleaching has occurred during El Niño events, but Fiji's reefs are generally healthier than much of the Indo-Pacific. The Yasawa Blue Lagoon, Beqa Lagoon, and Great Astrolabe Reef in Kadavu have largely avoided severe bleaching events. Fiji's deep-water upwelling provides cool refugia for corals during warming events — one reason its reefs remain so biodiverse compared to bleached reefs in Australia and Southeast Asia.
