The Yasawas: Fiji's Remote North

The Yasawa Islands are a chain of 33 volcanic islands running north to south about 80km from Port Denarau. Unlike the Mamanucas — which are flat coral atolls — the Yasawas are dramatic: jagged basalt peaks, deep blue lagoons, dense jungle, and traditional villages that have changed little in a century.

The famous Blue Lagoon — immortalised in the 1980 Brooke Shields film — sits at Nanuya Lailai Island in the northern Yasawas. The water here is otherworldly: 30+ metre visibility, warm year-round, and an emerald colour that defies photography. Nearby, the ancient Sawa-i-Lau limestone caves offer one of Fiji's most extraordinary experiences: swimming through an underwater passage into a hidden cathedral chamber.

The Yasawa Flyer — a large catamaran operated by South Sea Cruises — departs Port Denarau daily at approximately 8:30am and works its way north, stopping at all main islands. Journey times range from 2 hours (southern islands like Waya) to 5.5 hours (northern Yasawas). Seaplanes are available for those who want to skip the crossing (~25 minutes, from $220 one way).

Key Yasawa Islands & Experiences

Each island has its own character. Here's what to expect at the four unmissable stops.

Natural Wonder ~$25 pp

Sawa-i-Lau Caves

Ancient limestone caves accessible only by boat from resorts near Nacula. The main chamber is open to the sky, flooding the turquoise water with light. A short underwater passage — a five-second swim — leads to a hidden inner chamber. One of the most memorable experiences anywhere in the Pacific. The caves feature in Brooke Shields' 1980 Blue Lagoon film and have been wowing visitors ever since.

Adventure

Waya Island

The southernmost Yasawa island and the first major stop on the Yasawa Flyer, making it ideal as a base or first-night stop before hopping further north. Waya is dramatic — volcanic peaks rise sharply from the sea, the hiking is excellent, and the snorkelling off the southern beaches is world-class. Several of Fiji's most-loved backpacker resorts are here, and the authentic village atmosphere is a sharp contrast to the Denarau resort strip.

How to Get to the Yasawa Islands

Step-by-step from Nadi Airport to your island resort.

  1. 1

Transfer from Nadi Airport to Denarau

Book a private transfer direct to Port Denarau Marina — 15–20 minutes, from AUD $20 USD. Don't take an unbooked airport taxi (FJD$50–$80 and unmetered).

  2. 2

    Choose your Yasawa Flyer pass

Day Return ~$80 | 1-Week Bula Pass ~$349 | 2-Week Bula Pass ~$399. The Bula Pass allows unlimited hop-on/hop-off travel across all stops for the pass duration. Buy online at ssc.com.fj or from the South Sea Cruises desk at Denarau Marina.

  3. 3

Check in at Port Denarau Marina by 7:45am

The Yasawa Flyer departs at approximately 8:30am daily. Check in at the South Sea Cruises desk at least 45 minutes before departure. If your flight arrives late at night, stay overnight in Nadi or Denarau to make the morning sailing.

  4. 4

Board the Yasawa Flyer and alight at your island

Crew announce each island stop. Luggage and passengers transfer to small tenders at each island. Resort staff meet you at the pier. Bring seasickness medication — the open-ocean stretch north of the Mamanucas can be rough, especially June–August.

Yasawa Flyer insider tip: The 1-Week Bula Pass (~$349) is the best value for most visitors — it covers unlimited ferry travel between any Yasawa stop for 7 days. Combine two islands: stay 3 nights at Waya (south), then hop north to Naviti or Nanuya Lailai (Blue Lagoon) for another 3 nights. Book resorts well in advance in peak season (June–September) — budget bures near the Blue Lagoon fill months ahead.

Yasawa Islands FAQ

Common questions from visitors planning a Yasawa trip in 2026.

Can I visit the Yasawa Islands on a day trip from Denarau?
Technically yes — but it is strongly not recommended. The Yasawa Flyer takes 2–5.5 hours one way depending on your island, which means you'd spend 4–11 hours on the ferry for 1–2 hours actually on land. You'll arrive exhausted and barely see anything. The minimum sensible stay in the Yasawas is 2 nights — ideally 3 or more. If you only have a single day from Denarau, the Mamanuca Islands are a far better choice.
How do I book the Yasawa Flyer and Bula Pass?
Purchase passes through South Sea Cruises online at ssc.com.fj, or in person at their check-in desk at Port Denarau Marina (Terminal Building). You can also book through your resort when you confirm accommodation. Bula Pass holders get priority boarding and guaranteed seats. During peak season (June–August), buy your pass online at least a week in advance.
Is it safe to travel to the Yasawas as a solo traveller?
Very safe — the Yasawa Islands have been one of the world's most-recommended backpacker destinations for decades. Solo travellers, including solo women, are extremely common and universally report feeling safe and welcomed. Crime against tourists is essentially unheard of. The Fijian concept of kerekere (sharing and hospitality) means you'll be treated like a guest from the moment you step off the tender.
What is the best time of year to visit the Yasawas?
May–October (dry season) is the ideal window. June–August is peak season with the most reliable weather, best snorkelling visibility, and warmest beach days — but also the most tourists and highest prices. November–April (wet season) brings the risk of tropical storms and significantly choppier Yasawa Flyer crossings; some budget resorts close for part of this period. That said, wet season prices are notably lower and the islands are far quieter. Most days are sunny even in the wet season — Fiji's wet season is nothing like a European winter.
Do I need to book Yasawa resorts in advance?
In peak season (June–September), yes — particularly for popular budget bures near the Blue Lagoon on Nanuya Lailai and around Nacula. The best-value places fill up months in advance. In shoulder and low season (October–May) you can often book a few days ahead, and some smaller resorts accept arrivals directly off the Yasawa Flyer without a booking. Always have a backup option in mind if travelling without a confirmed reservation.
What currency should I use in the Yasawas?
Most Yasawa resorts price rooms and meal plans in Fijian Dollars (FJD). The exchange rate in April 2026 is approximately 1 USD = 2.27 FJD. Many budget resorts accept card payments, but ATMs do not exist on the islands — bring enough FJD cash from Nadi or Denarau for tips, cave visits, village donations, and any extras. Withdraw cash before boarding the Yasawa Flyer.
